2010 Wilson W. Phelps Grant

The Science Department currently has 50 microscopes to be shared by the approximate 1,800 students that participate in science classes each day. Our current microscopes are 20 years old and many are exhibiting extreme wear and tear from daily use. Most have been refurbished several times and many parts are no longer available for replacement. Routinely, a portion of each lab set is out for repair, which diminishes the effectiveness of the lesson. The twenty newly acquired microscopes allow our science students the opportunity to explore the concepts that are presented in class with modern equipment as well as participate individually in hands-on assignments and activities.

As an added benefit, the Flinn Compound Microscope is considered a high-quality piece of equipment while also being an economical choice, which allows Sunny Hills to maximize funding. The total grant amount from the Phelps foundation was $8360.
